Making a Cherita (a Malay word) choice

I have been torn at the idea of giving up blogging in favour of  a newsletter. Choices, confusing and constricting or not? The problem is even without the guarantee of an audience I like the freedom that blogging allows especially with my poetry. It’s my blog and I can write what I want and that includes a discussion on the Cherita however brief. Followers can follow or not.

Blogging allows writing without the pressure that exists in writing novels, indeed books of any genre. Choice? Should I, shouldn’t I? Time moves on regardless and now it has been two months without a blog for 2025. I decided that that was a good reason to make a choice, After all keeping the blog for me results in lots of writing practice and I can still work on the idea of the newsletter. Sounds good to me as least for now so let’s look at the Cherita.

A few years ago, I came across this beautiful way of writing called a Cherita. It is a type of poetry, a little different but very beautiful and of course poetry can take many forms. Not that it really matters because it is always a beautiful means of expression.  Cherita is the Malay word for story or tale and consists of a single stanza verse, followed by a two-line verse, and lastly finishing with a three-line verse. Having its very own format, strict but so easy to follow, won me over.

I found it a freeing way to write. It challenges with its unique presentation –  centred, untitled, and with line lengths at the discretion of the poet. For me, it offers a wide choice of topics and the creative challenge to make the topic meaningful. What an absolute joy.

I did feature this quite a few years ago but on rereading I realised it is about more than the end of things. What do you think?

Contained and Meaningful. I hope it appeals. Please feel free to let me know.

  1. Having gone through a similar struggle recently, I’ve decided to continue blogging. As you put it, blogging provided me a way to write whatever I wanted to convey. It also made me do due diligence as far as language and the content of what I am writing about. For these reasons, I decided to keep blogging. I’ve never heard of Cherita. Love the free form. Thanks for introducing it to me.
